Just My Type | Drew Now

Hi, I’m Drew Now. I’m a Canadian musician living in Nashville, TN. I recently released a new single called TYPE. It’s the story of my boyfriend, Ryan and I. Ryan is handsome, athletic and a successful entrepreneur. He was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when he was only 9 years old. Since dating him I’ve learned slowly about his diabetes. He handles it so well that sometimes I forget he even has it.

What I have learned over time is how diabetes makes him feel. It pains me at times that he feels like a burden – like it’s all too much for me to handle when that’s the furthest thing from the truth.

I thought Ryan deserved a song. Something uplifting, a three minute reminder that I’ll always be there and nothing is too much for me. I was nervous when I first played Type for him because he hates feeling like a spectacle, but he loved it. He said that he felt “understood” by me and that meant everything. It dawned on me that our story is not unique as there is a large, beautiful community of people who are just like us. I felt like they may also enjoy Type the way Ryan did. So now she is out on all streaming platforms for anyone to listen to.

It feels good writing a song that addresses the elephant in the room when it comes to our relationship. It plays on the word “type” and normalizes talking about it!  It has definitely allowed for more conversation and I am immensely proud of it. Diabetes never gives you a day off or a break. It can make you feel different from everyone else. I wanted Ryan to know I think he’s amazing and we can do this together. I hope Type reaches who it needs to reach.

  1. Thank you so much for posting this story Amber !!! Even better – as a Canadian T1D – great to see a fellow Canadian advocating for their partner in crime with a song like this! I don’t think I’ve ever heard a song dedicated to those of us living with diabetes over my almost 60 years as a pancreatically challenged person!
