Tuesday Topic: Could The Recent Cheese Recall Put Me 6 Feet Under?

Cheese - Grocery Store

I LOVE cheese more than red wine (BOLD statement), so when a recent recall hit the news – I FREAKED OUT!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – October 7, 2015 – “Well Known” Market is recalling cheese sold in all stores nationwide that came from its supplier because it has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. For the love of all things holy! Could cheese, something I love so dearly put me in the grave due to my weakened immune system?

At that very moment, I had four varieties of cheese from the Market in my fridge. Whew. I was in the clear – no Papillion Organic Roquefort in site, I’ll live to see another day.

This recent scare made me think about who was effected by the recall and sure enough, T1Ds were high on the list. We’re prodded to get flu shots and vaccinations, heavily encouraged to stay clear of sick folks and given tips to prevent anything that could compromise our immune system, but cheese… Give me a break! I won’t bore you with the glutinous amount of reading I did on weakened immune systems, but it was clear PWDs wouldn’t stand a chance. I can’t imagine kicking the bucket because I put mediterranean goat cheese on my veggie wrap. Even though I’m a little pissed about having to worry about crap like this, I have to laugh. If cheese is going to take me out, please put “She loved cheese more than red wine” on my tomb stone.
